Dear SPA Family, We cannot live alone. The longing for other people will always appear in our hearts. When they are gone, we will hug the TV set to ourselves, because - as an older man once said – ‘TV is the only one talking to me.’ We cannot live alone, and God does not want us to be alone. God created us in his own image and likeness. Yet GOD IS NOT Lonely. God is the Triune God. Jesus says this in the Gospel; the Father sends the Comforter - the Holy Spirit, who will teach us everything. He will remind us of everything that Jesus told us (Jn 14:26). The Holy Trinity is a unity, a communion of the Father, Son and Spirit. The divine persons are in mutual relations. The real distinction between the Divine Persons consists only in the relations in which one of them remains in relation to the others. The Divine Persons, the Father is referred to the Son, the Son to the Father, the Holy Spirit to the Father and the Son (CCC 255). God does not want us to be alone. He expresses this already at the time of creation: “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Gn. 2: 18-24). Interpersonal communion, modeled on the unity of the Trinity, becomes the ideal. By living with others in relationships animated by love, we can find fulfillment of our deepest needs and desires. God also wants us to live in union with Him. The Father calls us to communion with himself through Jesus in the Holy Spirit. With each person, He wishes to share His love, which is a bond of communion in the Divine Trinity. That is why he pours it into people’s hearts through the Holy Spirit. If we live in union with God, we will free ourselves from loneliness and, at the same time, from the pain that comes from living in isolation from others. We are loved by God, therefore we can experience true happiness: like St. Francis who united with God, was able to sing about Brother Sun and Sister Water: ‘How good to feel that I am not alone, that I am part of an inexhaustible life!’ The Church is a tool for uniting us with God. Through baptism, we become part of the community of the Church. When we believe in Christ, then we are never alone. For those who follow the teaching of Christ are always close to him. We can often find out about it when neighborhood help groups are established in parishes/neighborhoods - the strong and healthy devote their time to visiting and walking with the sick and living alone. Like our own Meals & Services. One woman told me that during on of the parish missions, leaving church after service, she never went straight home, but to her sick neighbor to tell her what she had experienced and heard in the church. “I tell her about everything,” she said, ‘and then we cry together with our emotions...” We are not made to live alone. Faith opens us to a relationship with the Triune God and to all those who were baptized in Its Name and make up the Church. The same faith obliges us to be a reflection of the Trinity as a community of Christ’s disciples, a communion which is bound by love. The witnesses of God’s love will draw others to live in union with God and with people in the Church. Then, the suffering caused by loneliness will diminish in the world. Have a blessed week. Fr.
